Volunteer Companion Program

The Volunteer Companion Program is an in-home respite service serving Waterloo Region.

It provides caregivers with short term relief from their care giving role and provides recreational/social stimulation and supervision to people with Alzheimer Disease or a related dementias.

About the program:

bullet

A volunteer visits from 1-4 hours each week at a regular time convenient to both the family and the volunteer.

bullet

Volunteers encourage the participant to engage in a variety of enjoyable activities that are geared to the person's abilities and interests.

bullet

Support is provided to the volunteer and family though close contact with the program coordinator.

bullet

Volunteers are 18 and older, and receive 12 hours of initial training as well as ongoing educational activities.

bullet

The program is based on the need for respite care and social opportunities.

bullet

Participants must live in their own home with their caregiver and have Alzheimer Disease or a related dementia.
