Purpose

Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias are progressive, degenerative diseases of the brain, and affects cognitive and motor skills required for everyday functioning.  A person with Alzheimer's Disease or a related dementia eventually is unable to care for themselves, and rely on the support of their caregivers.

While providing continuous support to their loved ones, caregivers constantly face obstacles, responsibilities, and difficult decisions.  These challenges can often be overwhelming.

Support groups can help individuals and family care providers by:

bullet

Finding support amongst peers and the community, and connecting with the Alzheimer Society.

bullet

Providing education about Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias, and ways to help reduce caregiver stress.

bullet

Enhancing care for the individual with the disease, and helping to provide for them in a way that heightens dignity and self-respect.

bullet

Encouraging caregivers to provide support such that both the caregiver and their loved ones are healthy and happy.
