Chapter HistoryThe first support group for Alzheimer caregivers in Cambridge began in 1980 at the Golden Years Nursing Home. In 1988, two family members began to explore the possibility of this group becoming a Chapter within the Alzheimer Association of Ontario and this dream became a reality in 1991 when we officially received non-profit, charitable status. Currently, there are 38 other local chapters, ten provincial and one national organization dedicated to supporting those affected by Alzheimer Disease and related dementia. Although chapters work closely together, we are all independently governed and managed.
Current and Projected NeedToday, the need for support is greater than ever. National statistics show that 25% of Canadians have a family member affected by Alzheimer Disease and 1 in 13 Canadians over the age of 65 currently suffer from the disease. In Waterloo Region, it is estimated that 3,600 people over the age of 65 have dementia, but this number is expected to increase to over 8,700 in the next 30 years.
Cambridge Chapter GrowthIn response to these staggering projections, the Alzheimer Society of Cambridge has been working hard to ensure that our community receives the support it requires. Over the last four years staffing has increased from two part-time staff to our current two full-time and three part-time employees. We also have the support of nine volunteer Board Members and numerous other volunteers who help us provide services to those in need throughout Cambridge and North Dumfries. Chapter Newsletters |
